Welcome

Hej You Guys,

Welcome to the Contemporary Art: 6th Floor Section Blog! In this 3rd space for Contemporary Art discussions, we will share ideas regarding the topics we have discussed in Professor Yood's lectures, our Thursday sections, and anything and everything that you guys have come across (during the assigned week) within the Contemporary Art World!

Though this blog is a requirement to further encourage writing and sharing concepts-it is meant to be fun! I am looking forward to exchanging fabulous ideas about gallery openings, museum exhibitions, and cultural happenings at SAIC, in and around the Chicago area, but also within the Contemporary Art World at large.

See you guys in class tomorrow!

Best,
:)

  1. Hi All!

I wanted to share an event that's off the beaten path. I am part of a collective called Sapphire and Crystals. We are a group of African American women artists who refuse to wait around for the art world to "discover" us, or limit our exposure to the month of February. We have been mounting our own exhibitions for about 20 years.

We are hosting a Postcard Show, featuring small works in a variety of media. There are about a dozen artists represented, including myself. We open on Saturday, 9/11/10, and run through the end of the month. The exhibition will be at the South Side Community Art Center, 3831 S. Michigan Ave. Saturday's reception will be from 4-9 pm. I'll post some pix on my Facebook page.

There will be a Bronzeville trolley tour next Friday, 9/17 that will stop at our show, along with Faie African Art, Gallery Guichard, and I believe 2 other venues. There is a trolley to and from one of the SAIC dorms--I'll post more info as I get it.

Also, I am hosting a Public Art Tour next Saturday, 9/18 for the Intro to VisArts class I teach at Chicago State. For the past 2 years, I've taken my students on a whirlwind walking tour of public art in the downtown area. The tour will run about 2 hours or so. Interested folk can meet us at the Chicago Cultural Center at Michigan and Randolph. I will push off at 9:30 am (yeah I know it's early). I begin the tour inside the Cultural Center, so if you arrive a little late, you can find us near the rotunda.

  2. I am not at all sure where or how to post a comment so
    I 'll do so here.
    My
gallery 'hop' began at River North ( while there check out Mr Beef on Orleans street for a Chicago style beef sandwich!!)with my first stop Zolla Lieberman Gallery with a show of works by Susanne Doremus. The works were loosely painted canvases sketchy and light. I thought I caught glimpses of interiors in a few out of the corner of me eye - but not sure. it was early and most of those in attendance seemed to be her friends and family with a few kids lying on the floor. Next stop - Judy Saslow Gallery on Superior St. - the gallery concentrates -though not entirely on 'outsider' work. The featured artist was Rebbecca Kinkead. a few feet from the door was a statement about the work - here is a portion of the statement "...a composer of personal recall and borrowed memories ..." wha...A terrific three tier spread wine water with the well heeled art lovers swarming round the goodies. Actually this was ( I think) the only appetizer table I saw all night.
Hopping on the brownline to the Madison street bus my next syop was West Loop with Carrie Secrist gallery as my first stop. A terrific and boisterous crowd! Across the hall is the Thomas McCormak Gallery with a strange but forceful exhibit Three dim. works displayed on industrial shelving! After introducing my self to the artist and shaoring with him my admiration of the work i departed for the Rhona Hoffman Gallery and Kahinde Wileys work.
Bright slick pop- like were they framed in rococo style frames - cant recall. a nice crowd a few sales with one sale tipping in at 140.000
Next stop the _____ gallery where i had a most pleasant conversation with the gallery owners' mother. Naturally i aked her if the phrase
S of RwDis C meant anything to her.
    It did not.
The art was conceptual MOSTLY PHOTOGRAPHS arranged cleanly on the dark walls for a rather calm and soothing environment.
But i have forgotten to mention the avid Weinberg Gallery in river north - a must see show of photography work.
catching the Halsted street bus i headed to a show in Bridgeport a benefit show for the residents of the gulf oil spill in which a frisnd was exhibiting a lovely painting. The food here was spectacular tasty nidbits of god knows what brought to us by the wandering waitstaff- this was truly a social event with new orleans style music and SOME interesting art.
