Hej you guys,
Look at this article from the LA Times Culture Monster...Culture Monster: Graffiti & Street Art Show
What are your thought about graffiti and street art moving into the museum?

Graffiti art in the museum--let's give it a whirl, shall we? After all, Basquiat and Haring are now household names; let's see who's doing fresh things with a spray can. These days, Chicago is into the street/community as studio; this seems to fit, though you can't buy spray paint in the city.
ReplyDeleteOn another note, glad Prof. Yood clarified postmodernism in class!
Took my students on a downtown tour of public art on Saturday. Highlights included Hunt, Miro, Picasso, Calder, Chagall, Tiffany, Brown, Moore, DuBuffet, Stella and Nevelson, along with the usual gang of Millennium Park suspects. We're fortunate to live in a world-class city, with so much art accessible to all.
Afterwards, attended a screening & panel discussion of Claudette Roper's "The Man Project". TMP is a cross-disciplinary work delving into the lives of African American men, told in their own words. Men and boys aged 7 to 91 speak their minds about love, friendships, fatherhood, family and race. A very powerful piece, designed to deconstruct/expand the limited and distorted media images of African American males. The panel was a selection of men featured in the documentary, and included students, writers, attorneys, teachers, radio personalities, social workers, and even former convicts. It just left me hungry for MORE!
Hej Juarez,
ReplyDeleteWhat is this you can not buy spray paint in the city? Really - I did not know that now that adds a new dynamic to the public art scene in Chicago!
I know - Emily also mentioned how great this Friday's lecture was!!
It is sooo great that you can take your students to see great art in public spaces - you are right Chicago is a fabulous city for that reason alone!
Is there a link for "The Man Project"? If so please send me an email!
You had an very eventful weekend - thanks for sharing!
